1976
A Kosmos biorhythm calculator and a notebook
Harvey Makishima buys a pocket biorhythm calculator at the height of the craze and begins charting the basketball he watches against the players' cycles, by hand. The notebooks never stop.
1986
The counting moves to Apple BASIC
A program does the arithmetic and leaves the looking to its author. Ten years of pen-and-paper records go in first.
1995
Biorhythm Secrets, for the home PC
With a computer scientist's help the program becomes software that can compute the cycles for one person or a whole roster, and carries the system of eight symbols and written descriptions that BioCalendar still uses.
2026
BioCalendar, rebuilt for the phone
The same engine at the centre, counting exactly as in 1976, with a written reading every morning, goals, a companion and family plans. The app.
In 1976, at the height of the biorhythm craze, Harvey Makishima bought a Kosmos biorhythm calculator: a pocket device that took a birth date and a calendar date and showed where the three cycles sat. He started with the basketball he was watching, charting players against the days they played, by hand, with pen and paper. He has been keeping records ever since.
That habit is the whole story of the company. Not a discovery, but a very long piece of record-keeping: decades of birth dates, calendar dates and the cycle positions that join them, written down and looked at again.
02 · The program
From paper to software.
In 1986 the notebooks became a program written in Apple BASIC, which did the counting and left the looking to its author. In 1995, with a computer scientist's help, it became software for the home PC: Biorhythm Secrets, which could compute the cycles for one person or for a whole roster, and which carried the system of symbols and written descriptions that BioCalendar still uses.
The app you can download today is that software rebuilt from the ground up for the phone, with the same engine at its centre. The cycle positions it shows are counted exactly as they were in 1976.

It works out where your physical, emotional and intellectual cycles sit on any day, counted from your birth date, and pairs that with one of 512 written readings. Plus plans add a reading written for you alone each day and a companion you can ask about your week; family plans let up to five people share one subscription and compare their days. How we talk about biorhythms
Plainly. Biorhythm theory is more than a century old and it has been tested: the studies that looked for an effect on performance, mood or accidents did not find one, and we say so on our evidence page. We do not claim that the cycles predict anything, and the app does not give medical, financial or safety advice.
What we offer is a pattern, counted carefully, and a few minutes each morning to hold the day up against it. Many people find that useful in the way a journal is useful: not because the pattern knows something, but because it gives them a reason to notice. That is the product, and it is enough.
